Description : Read Now Tudor Translation In Theory And Practice by Massimiliano Morini and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. filling a gap in the study of early modern literature, massimiliano morini here exhaustively examines the aims, strategies, practice and theoretical ideas of the sixteenth-century translator. morini analyzes early modern english translations of works by french and italian essayists and poets, including montaigne, castiglione, ariosto and tasso, and of works by classical writers such as virgil and petrarch. in the process, he demonstrates how connected translation is with other cultural and literary issues: women as writers, literary relations between italy and england, the nature of the author, and changes in the english language. since english tudor writers, unlike their italian contemporaries, did not write theoretical treatises, the author works empirically to extrapolate the theory that informs the practice of tudor translation - he deduces several cogent theoretical principles from the metaphors and figures of speech used by translators to describe translation. employing a good blend of theory and practice, the author presents the tudor period as a crucial transitional moment in the history of translation, from the medieval tradition (which in secular literature often entailed radical departure from the original) to the more subtle modern tradition (which prizes the invisibility of the translator and fluency of the translated text). morini points out that this is also a period during which ideas about language and about the position of england on the political and cultural map of europe undergo dramatic change, and he convincingly argues that the practice of translation changes as new humanistic methods are adapted to the needs of a country that is expanding its empire.

Description : Read Now Translation by Daniel Weissbort, Ástráður Eysteinsson and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. translation: theory and practice: a historical reader responds to the need for a collection of primary texts on translation, in the english tradition, from the earliest times to the present day. based on an exhaustive survey of the wealth of available materials, the reader demonstrates throughout the link between theory and practice, with excerpts not only of significant theoretical writings but of actual translations, as well as excerpts on translation from letters, interviews, autobiographies, and fiction. the collection is intended as a teaching tool, but also as an encyclopaedia for the use of translators and writers on translation. it presents the full panoply of approaches to translation, without necessarily judging between them, but showing clearly what is to be gained or lost in each case. translations of key texts, such as the bible and the homeric epic, are traced through the ages, with the same passages excerpted, making it possible for readers to construct their own map of the evolution of translation and to evaluate, in their historical contexts, the variety of approaches. the passages in question are also accompanied by ad verbum versions, to facilitate comparison. the bibliographies are likewise comprehensive. the editors have drawn on the expertise of leading scholars in the field, including the late james s. holmes, louis kelly, jonathan wilcox, jane stevenson, david hopkins, and many others. in addition, significant non-english texts, such as martin luther's "circular letter on translation," which may be said to have inaugurated the reformation, are included, helping to set the english tradition in a wider context. related items, such as the introductions to their work by tudor and jacobean translators or the work of women translators from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries have been brought together in "collages," marking particularly important moments or developments in the history of translation. this comprehensive reader provides an invaluable and illuminating resource for scholars and students of translation and english literature, as well as poets, cultural historians, and professional translators.

Description : Read Now Collaborative Translation And Multi Version Texts In Early Modern Europe by Belén Bistué and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. focusing on team translation and the production of multilingual editions, and on the difficulties these techniques created for renaissance translation theory, this book offers a study of textual practices that were widespread in medieval and renaissance europe but have been excluded from translation and literary history. the author shows how collaborative and multilingual translation practices challenge the theoretical reflections of translators, who persistently call for a translation text that offers a single, univocal version and maintains unity of style. in order to explore this tension, bistué discusses multi-version texts, in both manuscript and print, from a diverse variety of genres: the scriptures, astrological and astronomical treatises, herbals, goliardic poems, pamphlets, the greek and roman classics, humanist grammars, geography treatises, pedagogical dialogs, proverb collections, and romances. her analyses pay careful attention to both european vernaculars and classical languages, including arabic, which played a central role in the intense translation activity carried out in medieval spain. comparing actual translation texts and strategies with the forceful theoretical demands for unity that characterize the reflections of early modern translators, the author challenges some of the assumptions frequently made in translation and literary analysis. the book contributes to the understanding of early modern discourses and writing practices, including the emerging theoretical discourse on translation and the writing of narrative fiction--both of which, as bistué shows, define themselves against the models of collaborative translation and multi-version texts.

Description : Read Now The Art Of Translation by Jirí Levý, Ji?í Levý and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. jirí levý's seminal work, the art of translation, considered a timeless classic in translation studies, is now available in english. having drawn on adjacent disciplines, the methodology of czech functional sociosemiotic structuralism and the state-of-the art in the west, levý synthesized his findings and experience in the field presenting them in a reader-friendly book, which combines the approaches of a theoretician, systemic analyst, historian, critic, teacher, practitioner and populariser. although focused on literary translation from theoretical, descriptive and historical perspectives, it presents a conceptualization of a general theory, addressing a number of issues discussed today. the 'practical' mission of the book as a theory extending to practice is based on the same historical-dialectic affinity of methods, norms, functions and values, accounting for the translator's agency and other contextual agents involved in the communication process. the book will be useful to translators, researchers, students and teachers in translation and literary studies.

Description : Read Now Translation Changes Everything by Lawrence Venuti and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. in translation changes everything leading theorist lawrence venuti gathers fourteen of his incisive essays since 2000. the selection sketches the trajectory of his thinking about translation while engaging with the main trends in research and commentary. the issues covered include basic concepts like equivalence, retranslation, and reader reception; sociological topics like the impact of translations in the academy and the global cultural economy; and philosophical problems such as the translator’s unconscious and translation ethics. every essay presents case studies that include venuti’s own translation projects, illuminating the connections between theoretical concepts and verbal choices. the texts, drawn from a broad variety of languages, are both humanistic and pragmatic, encompassing such forms as poems and novels, religious and philosophical works, travel guidebooks and advertisements. the discussions all explore practical applications, whether writing, publishing, reviewing, teaching or studying translations. venuti’s aim is to conceive of translation as an interpretive act with far-reaching social effects, at once enabled and constrained by specific cultural situations. this latest chapter in his developing work is essential reading for translators and students of translation alike.

"starting with english vagrancy statutes and in particular from the fact that, from 1545 on, players were listed as vagrants, the book discusses from an entirely new perspective the reasons for the equation, in the early modern mind, of beggary with performing. pugliatti identifies in players' aptitude for disguise and in the fear raised by their proteiform skills the issues which encouraged the assimilation of beggars and players; she argues that at the core of provisions against vagrancy was an attempt to marginalize people who, because of their instability in location and role (that is, in their theatrical quintessence), were seen as embodying potential for subversion."--book jacket.

Description : Read Now Translation And Identity by Michael Cronin and you can download with pub, pdf, txt, doc, and more file format with free account. michael cronin looks at how translation has played a crucial role in shaping debates about identity, language and cultural survival in the past and in the present. he explores how everything from the impact of migration on the curricula for national literature courses, to the way in which nations wage war in the modern era is bound up with urgent questions of translation and identity. examining translation practices and experiences across continents to show how translation is an integral part of how cultures are evolving, the volume presents new perspectives on how translation can be a powerful tool in enhancing difference and promoting intercultural dialogue. drawing on a wide range of materials from official government reports to shakespearean drama and hollywood films, cronin demonstrates how translation is central to any proper understanding of how cultural identity has emerged in human history, and suggests an innovative and positive vision of how translation can be used to deal with one of the most salient issues in an increasingly borderless world.
